I Wish A Golf Coach Had Told Me This Sooner
Apr 28, 2025Transcript Summary-
Have you ever found that you pick up a great golf tip — maybe to hit your driver straighter or strike your irons better — and it works for a few days, but then suddenly, it just stops working? That’s exactly what happened with one of my students, Paul. He came to see me, and you could feel the frustration in his voice and body. This is a guy who practices a lot, but he wasn’t seeing any real improvement, and all the energy he was putting in without results was really starting to get to him. And unfortunately, he was falling into the same trap that I’ve fallen into myself many times. So in this video, I want to share exactly what we did to help Paul not only hit his driver straighter and longer but also strike his irons much more solidly — and in a way that felt completely effortless to him.
Before we dive into it, if you’re new to the channel, please consider subscribing. I release videos like this every single week to help you improve your game, and I also provide free downloadable practice guides linked in the description below so you never have to remember a thing. Now, what we did with Paul is something I believe every golfer needs to understand, no matter what you’re working on. Whether you’re trying to stop a slice, fix a hook, or simply strike your irons better, what you’re about to learn is simple — and it’s a real game-changer.
So what was happening with Paul? Well, all golfers need to do three main things well: control the clubface orientation, strike the ball cleanly, and generate speed. And to achieve all three, the first thing you must get really good at is feeling the clubhead. Paul wasn’t doing that. He was working hard — very hard — trying to put the club in all the right positions, but all that effort was just creating tension, and he’d end up slicing his driver and struggling with inconsistent iron shots. So our goal was simple: I needed to teach Paul how to truly swing the clubhead, not just think about it.
I shared a simple metaphor with Paul that was a real eye-opener. I said, have you ever had a conversation with someone but your mind was somewhere else? They ask you a question, and you realize you weren’t really listening. That’s exactly what happens in the golf swing — we’re so caught up in internal instructions that we lose the connection with the clubhead. So with Paul, we stopped everything and just focused on feeling the weight of the clubhead. I got him to swing without thinking about mechanics — just feeling the weight and the momentum, like a pendulum. Immediately, his swing started to look and feel freer. His body relaxed. It was an instant change.
From there, I had Paul hit some shots just feeling that pendulum motion. No mechanical thoughts, no instructions — just the sensation of the club swinging. Straight away, he hit his irons straighter and cleaner than he had in a long time, without even trying to consciously control the clubface. And then I said, “Paul, let’s now see if you can add a bit more distance.” Naturally, by sensing and increasing the momentum — without forcing it — he was able to hit the ball further without losing control or adding tension. His body just instinctively knew how to move.
When we moved to the driver, it was a bit different. Paul was still slicing it slightly, but even then he said, “Danny, this is already better than what I’ve been doing!” Simply feeling the clubhead had already started the transformation. Now that he had the feel, I showed him how to fix the slice by teaching him how to feel the toe of the club beating the heel to the ball. We did a couple of left-hand swings and then added the right hand — just small simple feelings — not thoughts, not mechanics. Once he got that feel, the slice turned into a little fade, then into a straight shot, and eventually even a slight draw. It was so simple because he now had a real connection with the clubhead.
I explained to Paul — and I want to share it with you too — that when you feel the clubhead, you can shape shots naturally. Want a draw? Feel the toe leading the heel. Want a fade? Feel the heel leading the toe. As professionals, we can move the ball left and right because we have that feel, that relationship, with the clubhead. And that’s what creates effortless, enjoyable golf.
So, if you ever feel like you’ve lost your swing, it’s usually because you’ve lost your connection with the clubhead. Not because you’ve forgotten some technical move. Please, please, work on developing this feel. It’s probably the most important thing you can learn to improve your golf.

Full Transcript - Have you ever found that when you're trying to hit driver straight or even strike your irons better you have a golf tip and it works for a very short period of time but for whatever reason after about a week it suddenly stops completely well this was the case for a recent student of mine Paul who comes to see me and you could see the level of frustration in his body and his voice now this is a guy who practices a lot but you know what he wasn't getting better and that level of frustration because of the energy and effort he's putting in was really getting to him now unfortunately he was falling for the trap falling into the trap that we've all done i've fallen into it many times myself in this video I want to share with you exactly what we did to help him hit drivers straighter and longer but also help him hit his irons much much more solid in an effortless easy way this is what he described at the end he says "Danny that just all my tension's gone it feels so much more enjoyable now." I'm going to share with you what I shared with him because I think no matter what you're working on in your golf swing this video is a must i don't think anybody can improve their golf swing without knowing this first before I get into the video look if you're new to the channel your first lesson of mine please consider subscribing i release videos like this every single week to try and help you improve your game plus you never have to remember a thing everything we do here I'll put into a free download practice guide in that description box below so if you don't mind I'd love for me to share with you the process that I took Paul through because whether you're trying to if stop a slice with your driver or stop a hook or or strike your irions better I promise you what you're going to see here you're going to be surprised at how easy and effortless this really really is um so you know golf golfers all of us want to need to do three things right so we want to be able to control the orientation of his face we want to make sure the club face returns back you know fairly square to impact to hit a reasonably straight shot we also need to be very good at putting the club and landing the club in the correct position so we strike the ball effectively and the third thing we need to be very very good at knowing how to increase the speed of this club so we can hit it longer so in order to do that what one thing do you need to get really good at feeling do you think the club head that's it to start with you've got to learn to feel really feel where this club head is in space and Paul wasn't doing that okay now what Paul was doing was he was trying really hard to put the club in position he was definitely trying to control the club head trying to move it into positions etc but none of it was really working all that really did was feed lots of tension and he would just slice his driver he would be really inconsistent with his irons he wouldn't hit it anywhere near as far as we got him to hit it in the end so goal number one for Paul was I needed to teach him how to truly swing the club head so let me show you what this looks like because a lot of people say that when they when they've seen a professional swing they make it look easy and effortless the ball seems to go a long way now I've got a 7 iron here so let me show you what a free flowing golf club looks
like nice and simple what we got there almost 180 yards so how can you start to begin to let this club swing freely because it's because a lot of people try really hard to do this but they still struggle well I shared a simple kind of metaphor with uh Paul which was a real eye opener for him and I want to share it with you right now have you ever had a conversation with somebody where they're chatting away but your mind's somewhere else you have you're thinking about something they're still talking you're thinking about something at the end of the conversation they turn to you and ask you a question about it and because you weren't listening you go "Uh sorry I wasn't listening how did you perform in that conversation?" Not great right well the same is true in the golf swing when you're swinging a golf club a golf club you're having a conversation between the club head and you the problem is is that most of the time what you me and a lot of golfers are doing certainly Paul was doing you're having this conversation in your head about do this and do this and do this but your club head you're not having that conversation with the head you don't feel where it is because there's so much else going on right up here so the first thing I did with Paul was I said "Look Paul I want you to make a swing." And this is what I want you to do if you can do this with me stop the video and really feel this it's amazing make some swings and I want you to pay attention to the weight of the head get a feeling of it don't try to do a chief head just feel the weight and momentum of this head now as soon as we did that Paul said "You know what Dan it feels like a pendulum." Brilliant what are these things they're feelings they're images they're not instructions instructions lie up in our head feelings and images lie out here there a sensory experience he's really feeling that immediate as he's starting to kind of feel and imagine this pendulum motion his body instantly started to relax so before we got into helping him hit it straighter and longer and work on the driver I said "Well let's learn that skill first." I got him to make some swings and hit some shots and see if he could recognize whether he was having a real great conversation with the club could he actually experience the golf club swinging in the golf swing versus just being stuck in his head giving himself a load of instructions so he got to the golf ball and like I said I said "Hold that image of a pendulum feel that momentum hit a few shots where you're feeling that momentum of that golf club backwards and forwards don't worry about necessarily distance at this stage just see if after each shot you can eliminate those instructions for a second and just feel the weight of the club swinging backwards and forwards i could tell instantly he was doing it because when somebody's in a sense swinging the weight of the club everything about their shoulders their body it just looks easy and effortless now what was really surprising for Paul is with his irions particularly not so much with his driver to start with but with his irons he was hitting them really straight so much straight than he's done and all he was focusing on was the weight of the golf club now I said to him I'd like you to now hit the ball a little bit further he says "Oh no daddy i'm I'm really happy with that." I said "Yeah but you could do so much better right?" I said "But what happens if I lose control?" I said "Well look at this." So I got him to pick up pick up a golf club and I want you to do the same you've now got I said "Paul you've now got momentum of the golf club right so just hold the club out in front of you here just what would you do to increase that momentum just do it don't overthink it just just let your body work this out now I can tell you that I am lifting my arm up and that increases momentum but I did this naturally i because I'm feeling this it's like my body goes it knows what to do to increase that momentum and was that lots of effort no so the same thing with Paul i said "Look when you're swinging now let your body start to figure out how to kind of increase that momentum." Now technically if you're watching you'll start to see for instance there's a pushing off the right leg to accelerate the club back and on the way through there's weight goes onto the left leg and then look the left leg pushes and accelerates on the way through these are great technical things but the reality is your body knows how to do them once it can feel the momentum of the club your body will go "Right how do I increase the momentum?" Allow it to work it out it won't work it out if you lose the feel of it and you start to overthink this because again you've lost that connection with the club head so all I gave Paul now I said look just keep imagining let your body try to figure out how to increase the momentum of that
club yeah once it starts to feel it it can start to kind of there is the weight i'm going to accelerate the club away and I'm going to accelerate it through it starts to really sense the momentum of the golf club and you know what he didn't lose any control the balls started to fly beautifully straight and it was really surprising for him so much so that we then said "Oh let's have a look at driver." Now with driver it was really interesting now Paul basically right from the the first shot had a little bit of a slice with a driver but here's what he said he said "Danny you don't understand i haven't been hitting driver this is already better." So simply getting a feeling of the weight of the club swinging yeah just that alone enabled him to actually strike driver the problem was is which is great it's a great starting point and this is what I'm saying it's so easy to do the problem was is when he was swinging it the club was coming down quite steeply and across the line of the golf ball and the face was slightly open so he was hitting he was hitting basically a slice right and I said to him "Now you can feel the club head right now you can feel it what do you need to do?" Well if your face is open in a slice what do you need to do you need to get the toe basically beating the heel to the ball the second thing you need to do is as opposed to swinging this way you need to swing over here well how easy is that to do if you've now got a relationship a conversation going with the club head so all I did is I said "Look start off by doing this just with your left hand just imagine the toe beating the heel to the ball." And we were in the driving range b i said "Just swing the club head as if you're going to hit the the driving range net over this side bang just swing it down like this get a feel of that." To start off with he did this he tried to do it again he's he's thinking about it too much i said "No stop the thinking either take a picture of this get it in your mind the toe overtaken the heel or just have a feeling of it you can't see the club can you but I can feel it so I'm swinging the club head in this direction take my right hand now do the same thing just swing the club in that direction and visualize or feel the toe arriving at the golf ball ahead of the heel what do you think happened that slice didn't completely get her away to start with but it turned into a little fade he then hit another ball that fade turned into a straight shot he then hit another ball and that fade turned into a little draw why was it so simple because the object that hits the golf ball is the club head if you can keep a relationship going with it and really feel it you can do whatever you want so look at this here look if I wanted to get that ball and a path working a face to path I can feel the toe overtaking the heel i can create my draws look watch i'm going to create this shot the face to path is going to be slightly claws look and there we are we've got a beautiful little kind of draw from right to left i'm exaggerating obviously if I wanted to play a fade shot why can I as a professional can I move the ball left to right as well because do you know what if I've got a feel of the face the heel look I'll just feel the heel now leads the toe so there we go so look at this now I'm going to exaggerate this a lot but watch i can feel the heel take leading here look and look I've left my fist wide open and I've hit look a big slice how can I do that because I have a relationship with this golf club once you start to build that relationship up we can start to work on basically making you more consistent through the golf ball that's all we did with Paul and the reason why it felt so effortless because for the first time he wasn't in his head he was having a real conversation with the golf club and that is what happens when you start to play really good golf you just have this lovely connection when you feel like you have lost your game which I hear a lot yes you've lost it because you have lost the connection with the thing that hits the golf ball please please please this for me is one of the most important things you can learn understand it when you're in your head versus out here in the club or inside your body all right so I really hope you enjoyed this video i think it's so so important for the for the game of golf and look if you enjoy this video make sure you give it a thumbs up share it with a friend who you know probably needs something like this if you enjoy videos like this and you want to become part of the channel press that subscribe button down below and if you want to know how um this works with a short game click this video out right here but until next week have a wonderful golfing.
