To Hit Driver Straight Always Position Your Arms Like This!
Feb 23, 2026Transcript Summary-
Alright, so I was just about to show you how to hit your driver straight when Leo — my videographer and a beginner golfer — mentioned he’s been really struggling with direction. He’s got this big slice going on, and instead of getting better, it’s actually been getting worse. So I thought, perfect opportunity to show you live how we can straighten it up in just a few minutes by understanding a couple of simple things.
Now, when we looked at Leo’s shots, they were all incredibly consistent — but consistently in the woods on the right! That’s the frustrating part, right? The consistency’s there, but the direction’s off. What’s happening is classic slice mechanics — his swing path is moving left of target, and the clubface is open to that path. That’s what creates that side spin sending the ball off to the right. So we needed to reverse it — get the swing path more to the right while closing the face relative to that path.
To do this, I showed Leo a quick little setup drill. Left arm palm down, right arm palm up — almost like you’re giving blood. That automatically gets the right arm under the left and helps set the swing path to the right. Then we turned the clubface down slightly — that’s your closed position. Now, the feeling we’re after is that your swing path feels like it’s going to the right of target, but your clubface feels slightly left of that path. That’s how we reverse the slice.
Leo hit a few shots with that new feel, and instantly, the face-to-path numbers flipped — from slicing to straight down the fairway. Huge difference! It’s not perfect yet, but the ball’s in play — and that’s the goal when you’re out on the course. You don’t need to think about ten different swing thoughts. You just need one key feeling that gets that face-to-path relationship working in your favour.
As we went on, Leo started ripping it — even hitting a lovely little draw at one point! Not bad for someone who plays once every couple of months. Of course, he got a bit carried away near the end and started topping a few (we’ve all been there), but that’s golf. The main thing is he now understands how to fix it mid-round when that slice shows up.
So if you’re slicing it everywhere, start by fixing that face-to-path relationship. This one change alone can help you hit your driver so much straighter. And if you want a deeper dive into how this works, I’ve got a full video on that — just click the one here. Thanks to Leo for jumping in, and from both of us, have a great golfing week!
Full Transcript- So, I was just about to show you how to hit driver straight, but then Leo, my videographer, beginner golfer. Yeah. You said just been struggling on the course with direction. It's sort of going everywhere. So, Leo got his big slice um going with his driver and he said it's not kind of curing. It's getting worse. So, I thought maybe a good time to kind of just show you live right now in just a few minutes how we can straighten that up just by understanding a couple of simple things.
There we go. So nice. There's another one. I'm pleased with the distance, but uh not the direction. So again, this time, look, face the path 14, swing direction minus 7. Okay, keep going.
Pretty consistent. Very.
It's brilliant. It's It's unbelievably consistent, isn't it? Unbelievable. Yeah. Just not on the fairway. So, what's cool about that, Leah, is they're all consistent. Yeah. Right. They're all consistently in the woods on the right hand side. Right now, that can be frustrating. And if you're at a golf course, you haven't got time to do these magical kind of like work on this and work on that. You've got to kind of find a way to get that ball going down the fairway. Sure. Whenever you have curvature on a golf ball, this is what's always happening. Whether you hook the ball or slices golf ball, you have the face in an opposite go lined up in an opposite direction to where the path's going. Right? So with yourself, you can see with the swing direction, the circle minus 5.7, you have a circle that is heading left of target. Yep. And you have a face that is open six degrees to that path. So we've got then that's what creates the spin which then sends it out over to the right hand side. Okay, we have to find a way to reverse that. Right. So what we're going to do is we're going to try and do the opposite. We're going to in a sense try to get your path or your circle more angled in this direction while your face is angled in the opposite direction. So we're going to try to reverse that motion. Right. Okay. The way we're going to do that is we can do it. First of all, it's going to have to be a feeling, right? So, what I'm going to get you to do, jump in for a second. Yeah, sure. Okay. Now, you'd have seen me give this to Tina. It's such a a great exercise to kind of really kind of sort that face the path out. Just drop the club for a second. Okay. Put your left arm up. Okay. Feel what that's like. Right. Okay. Palm facing down. Right. Leave the upper arm where it is. It's rotated this way. Sure. And simply rotate the lower arm there. Just the wrist. Okay. That is how we're going to grip the golf club. Sure. Now put your right arm palm facing upwards. Perfect. Right. Good. Now already you can see if when the palm's facing upwards, there's already the right arm is lower than the left. Sure. This is really important. Okay. From here, keeping that where it is, turn the face. Great. That's how we're going to grip the golf club. Okay. Got it. Okay. So, so moving to that position there where you literally palm down. Palm down. Yeah. Turn the turn the turn just turn the wrist to grip the golf club. Beautiful. Yeah. And now from here, palm up. Really feel like the right elbows moving underneath like you're giving blood. Yes. It's when you do this, watch this. Not stretched out. Just underneath. Look at this. Sure. There you go. So it's There you go. And then move it onto the golf club. Sure. Okay. Now, what's important here is this. We're going to get that sense that those forearms here are aiming what feels like right target. But look, watch this. We're gonna get the sense that the face is aiming left of that. Sure. You follow? Yeah. So, your sense here is that you've got your body feeling like it's aiming in one direction while the face is aiming in the other direction. Right now, you said to me before sometimes when you do something like this, you get the face aiming, you push this out open as well. Yeah. I might just exaggerate the circle. Yeah. And go around like that. But you've left the face and then Yeah. I haven't really thought about the handle. Exactly. Right. So, this is what this is all about. So, we're going to simply set the circle. Yeah. So the right arm is naturally below the the left. That sets the the path this way. And then we're going to turn the face down this way. There you go. So the face feels like it's aiming more left of where this is going. Sure. Got it? Yeah. Let's have a go. So just exaggerate. Does that make sense? So make a few swings and just get a sense of when you're swinging you feel like that circle is more this way. Yeah. But the face is left of that. Sure. So the sensation if we were doing this, it feels almost a bit like that, doesn't it? Sure. Make sense? Yeah. And in an exaggerated way. Yeah. Okay.
Felt good. I think so. Yeah. I'll take that. I will take that. Okay. That's super impressive, right? And if you think about it on a golf course, that is in a sense what you need, isn't it? That's what you really need, right? So, you've just changed in one ball your face to path to just 7, right? Which is going to get you down the fairway. Yeah. So, so important. And that is the starting point. Of course, there's things we need to improve the consistency of the circle and your bottom of your swing, but when you're playing on a golf course and you start to slice that golf ball, you need something that is going to switch that face the path round. Definitely. And getting the left arm on top here. Yeah. Yeah. So, that turns this in. Then you turn the ground and we grip. Yeah. Then we take the trail arm, we move it under right right underneath here so that we're like we're giving blood. And then look, then we turn the hand onto the club. Notice this. I'm not t doing this. Yeah, sure. That sets the forearms here. And then this is important. You have to feel what that's done to the swing circle. Yeah. Notice that there close your eyes. Feel how that's moved that swing circle. What it feels like over here. Sure. But then keep your eyes closed for a second. Feel that the club face is left of that. See that? Sure. That's you then reversing this. Because let's imagine the opposite. you here with a fist there. Feel the opposite. Yes. Got it. 100%. Yeah. And now switch round. Yeah. There you go. Got it. Okay. Good. Let's prove it's not fluke. Round two. Round two. Right. This is So we now we've now moved on to the fifth hole. Long par five. Yeah. I've lost three balls. We've lost the first three balls. The fourth ball we found. Now we're on the fifth hole. Lovely par five. Let's go. Okay.
How that one feel? Felt good. That'll do. Yeah, I'll take it. We're still in the fairway. Exactly. Right. So, we're not perfect. Sure. Right. But now look at this. We can play with that. Definitely. Right. And that to start with, right, is goal number one. Get the sense of that face where it's now it's left of the forearms. Yeah.
Felt good. Oh, I'll take that. I'll take that. There we go. Look at that beauty. So, nice little draw on that as well. It is. I mean, it's so good. So, so good. So, we're now we've smashed it down the fifth. We're now on the seventh hole. We're hitting it. We're ripping it. We're now up to 256 yards. Keep going. Right. Right. Let me remember the Yeah, that's it. So, under then over. So, like that. Now, there's going to be people here watching thinking that you're a ringer and you're a pro golfer. Still haven't broken 100. So, yeah, you get right. Still haven't broken. You can ask my friends. How often do you play golf? Honestly, probably once every two months. Once every two months. I want you to probably I'm too busy editing the videos. So, you can see here, anybody can do this. They really can.
No. Now, that's unlucky. Now Leo's got a bit carried away. He's gone for the big smash tense stuff. Yeah, tense stuff. Went for the big smasher and starts topping it. Yeah. Do you know what? We're going to leave it there cuz you've done brilliantly well. Leo's got a bit carried away with himself. But this is lovely. This is exactly what you should be doing on a golf course. Okay. You can see very, very quickly you can start to hit more fairways by making simple changes like this. Fixing that face to path. If you happen to be slicing all over place, hooking all place, this is always the thing to do initially first. Then have some fun with it. Yeah, you're gonna mess them up sometimes, right? Definitely. As as we've just seen, it doesn't matter. But the key is is you don't want to have a load of things to think about. This one thing can really fix and help you hit driver so much straighter. Leah, thanks so much for jumping in. I really, really do appreciate it. And of course, if you enjoyed the video, give it a thumbs up. Maybe share it with one of your friends who struggling with balls flying everywhere that this will really really help them.
