Use This Effortless Swing Tip To Hit Driver Longer
Sep 22, 2026Transcript Summary -
In last week’s video, I showed how you can hit your irons further with a very short golf swing, and the response has been incredible. A lot of golfers have said they’re hitting the ball further and with much less effort. The same principle can be applied to the driver, especially for golfers who don’t have the flexibility or ability to make a long, extended swing.
The first thing I want you to understand is the importance of knowing your destination. You need to have a really clear idea of where you want your body to finish in the follow-through. For the driver, that means having your weight slightly more forward, with the ball opposite your lead heel, and creating that natural tilt away from the target. From there, your eyes, ears and shoulders should all be angled rather than level. This gives your body a clear position to organise itself around.
A lot of golfers, particularly slicers, move in the opposite direction. They lunge towards the target, their head moves forward and their trail shoulder gets too high. That makes it very difficult to sweep the driver through the ball. Instead, I want you to feel your trail shoulder staying low and working around you. That allows you to approach the ball from a much better position and encourages a more natural upward strike.
The drill I use is what I call the longest putt drill. Start by making short practice swings and visualise yourself getting into that destination position. Don’t worry about distance initially. Just focus on repeating the movement and checking your feedback. Are your eyes and ears still angled? Has your head stayed behind the ball? Is your trail shoulder lower than your lead shoulder? Your body is incredibly smart, and with enough repetition it will start to organise itself around that destination.
Once you’ve got the movement, the next step is learning where the speed comes from. You don’t need to immediately make your backswing longer. Instead, you need to experience how to accelerate the club. You can see a similar movement in other sports, like ice hockey, where the lower body begins to brace while the arms and hands accelerate through. If your hips continue turning with your torso all the way through, you can actually rob yourself of speed.
A really simple way to feel this is to turn the driver upside down and hover it above the ground. Then make a swing and create some noise with the club. The feeling should be that you’re accelerating the club underneath and through you, almost like an underarm throw. You’ll naturally find that your body braces and resists while your arms and hands accelerate. That’s the hidden speed we’re looking for.
You can then take that feeling back to the ball. Keep the swing relatively short, move towards your destination, and feel that catapult action through the ball. The trail shoulder works low and around, while the arms and hands accelerate underneath. It might feel more like a punch or a throw rather than a traditional golf swing, but that’s exactly the sensation you want to develop.
Once you’ve learned the movement and you have the flexibility to make a longer swing, you can simply take that same feeling higher. The trail shoulder can work up more in the backswing, but the club still needs to be thrown underneath rather than coming over the top. The key is that you’re not creating speed by simply making the swing longer; you’re learning how to accelerate the club at the right time.
The biggest thing I want you to take away is to know your destination first, then learn how to accelerate into it. When you do that correctly, your body naturally braces, stays behind the golf ball and gives you the freedom to create speed. You don’t have to force it. It’s a much simpler way of understanding the golf swing, and it can be especially useful if you’ve struggled with power, flexibility or slicing.
Full Transcript- So, I don't know if you watched last week's video, but it went viral. People have been coming feeding back saying that they can't believe how much further they're now hitting their iron shots and how effortless it is. And I showed them how to do it with a very, very short golf swing. A lot of my students, they don't have the ability sometimes, whether through injury, flexibility, etc., to swing like a top or swing in a really extended way. So, when that happens, I show them this.
Now, hopefully, if you saw that, you probably saw a very, very short golf swing that has traveled 250 yd, right? Pretty simple. But, I'm doing two things that I want you to know. And this is what we I shared in last week's video, but slightly different for driver. You need to know where you're finishing in that follow-through. This is super, super important. Having a really clear destination of where you need to get through on the way through helps your body organize itself in a really effortless way. The second thing, in order to kind of generate speed speed that, you know, almost hidden speed, you need to know how to accelerate or I often call catapult the club at the right time. Knowing this, or knowing how to do it, is absolutely crucial. But, the first thing we want to do, and I'll set help you set up this drill up now, is know where your destination is. Because what's fascinating is um with my my new swing app, we're seeing all kinds of destination on the way through. So, if you happen to be, let's say, a slicer of the golf ball who or somebody who lacks power, this move on the way through, where I see this kind of lunge forward, 196,000 golf swings in the app are doing this one move. It's absolutely crazy. But, I'm going to show you how you can fix that because I think it's just a simple understand where you need to get to motion. So, here's how you set the drill up. Driver, we're going to have the ball we want to hit slightly on the way up we drive for most people or at least level. So, get the ball just opposite the lead heel. Hopefully, this camera angle is going to show you that. Then, what I want you to do is I want you to put a little bit more weight over on this lead side. You might be going, "Well, I thought I was supposed to have my weight on my right side with driver." Well, if you put your weight just slightly further forward, look what this does to the tilt of your body. Just tilts it back a a fraction. And for a lot of players, I might to golfers, hitting slightly up on the golf ball is a really good thing because it helps you hit the ball a little bit further. So, that's the first thing. The next thing I want you to do is this. This is crucial. Simply know where you're going to go to, right? So, from here, what I want to do is this. Weight's forward. All I want you to do is swing to about halfway. And what we're going to be looking at here is the angle of your eyes, your ears, and your shoulders. Notice that mine are on an angle here. Why is that? We play golf on an angle. If we play golf up here, my ears would be level, my eyes would be level, but we play golf down here. So, knowing that this is the destination we're going to is just a beautiful um thing to kind of go for. Your body can organize itself around that. Too many people, like I say in the app, we're seeing this motion here where this trail shoulder look is really, really high, where the head's lunged forward, forcing the eyes into this position. So, simply knowing your destination and repeating that a few times like this will train the motion of where you want to get to on the way through. Now, here's where the crazy bit starts. From here, you do what I call is the longest putt drill. All you do is you make a few practice swings, where all you're going to do here is swing the club just to about halfway. You'll always swing that longer. You'll see in a second I swing back a bit longer. But, this is the feeling. Now, from here, make a few swings from this position where all you're doing is you're making some swing backwards and forwards visualizing yourself moving into this position. It could be the ears angled this angle, eyes angled this angle. I like to go on my feet. It's my It's my my trail shoulder here is very, very low and it's working around on an angle and it stays very, very low. Why is this important for most golfers? Well, because most people you're not used to you keeping this trail shoulder low going through. Most of the time it's coming and attacking the golf ball at a very high position which chops down on the golf ball. It's a disaster for driver. We want to get the feeling of this trail shoulder coming from a low position here hitting naturally sweeping that ball beautifully look off that tee. So, this simple drill here once you've got a feel of it is absolutely brilliant. So, that's the way you start. We're going to show you how you add power in a second, but initially don't go for distance. Just hit a few shots where you swing about to here and you'll go further and then swing through visualizing these angles on the way through. Let's have a look.
Now, look at my angles here. My trail shoulder is lower than my lead shoulder. My eyes are at an angle. My ears are at an angle here. And that's a pretty decent distance for what feels like just a tap, yeah? So, ignore my distance. I'm not saying you can achieve that with this motion to start with, but initially just practice and notice where you're finishing. And what I absolutely love about this personally is when you're making these motions, your body is super smart. You won't get this straight away. You're not supposed to. You know, a drill like this is something that you practice over and over again. But, you've got feedback. If you start to look at your ears and they're at this angle or your head's gone forward and your trail shoulder isn't in this nice low position. Great. Wonderful feedback. You go again. Yeah? Okay. So, practice that. Know your destination. But, the big question, I'm sure that's on your mind, how do I then hit the ball longer? Well, the first thing you do is you don't have to jump into a longer golf swing to start with. What you need to do is you need to experience where this speed comes from. And there are some major clues in other sports. I want to uh just check out some footage from an ice hockey player. Notice when they're in a sense hitting a puck, what does it happens to their back foot? Can you see how their back foot is almost going backwards? Almost like a Scottie Scheffler. I don't see this with top uh top players, sorry, poor players. Top players. Poor players. What I see, which it kills the power, is is a lot of people are often saying, "Danny, I want to follow through. I want to have a good follow through." So, they look like this. Their hips and everything are turning with their torso together because that's what they think they're supposed to be doing. But, if your hips continue to move with your torso, you are robbing yourself of so much speed. The hips yes, turn, but then look. Then they stop. There's an acceleration. Now, the simplest way to achieve this naturally is to see this. Turn your driver upside down. Be careful not to hit it on the ground. Hover it above the ball. And I want you to create some noise with this. So, you're going to visualize this arc coming through. But, this time
Can you hear that noise? And where my finishing still? This position. But, there's another secret here. Did you see me finish like this? I didn't do that. I finished short. Why? What naturally creates I naturally got me to finish short? Because I am accelerating my arms and my body is working very hard to resist this all naturally. You get this completely for free. Very different to when people are going for this what feels like an effortless motion.
There's nothing there. How it makes sense? So, it's Another example would be bowling a ball down an alley. There's a throwing motion. Use the arm speed. Use the hand speed. We're often told not to use that. Okay? Look at how I swung so fast I blew the ball off the tee. So, develop that sensation. Yeah, don't go longer to start with. Now, I'm going to increase the speed as I'm going to imagine now that snap. Here's my distance putt with a long putt. Swing to my destination. Now, I'm going to imagine accelerating that club through here. This trail shoulder working back, working down, and I am throwing that underneath. It's like an underarm throw into that position there. So, again, I'm going to try and keep it short. It will always want to go that little bit longer, but this is the sensation. Just a long putt.
Might just push that just a fraction. But, there you go. 279 70 yd there almost, yeah? I just got a little bit too inside on that one again. That's all. It doesn't matter, right? I just got a little bit underneath that too much. Pushed it out to the right hand side a little bit too here. Reverse this more around this way. Okay? Get that face working more around. But, look how far that's gone for a very, very short swing. Now, if Once you've got that sensation and you have the flexibility to go longer, well, all you're doing is like if you've got a bowling ball, this trail shoulder goes is going to go up higher, and then it's still look going to throw underneath me, not over the top and around me. Underneath. It's an underarm throw. This is where we we're where we're going. So, we've now got underarm here, finish at this angle. And all I'm going to do now is really again
feel that catapult motion. And look, if you want feedback on this, go and check out my app. I'll leave a QR code somewhere around here. I'll pin it to the top comment below this video. You know, check yourself. You know, you'll know whether you're doing this because people who don't do this move forward. They lunge forward and they rob themselves of speed. But when you do this correctly, the body naturally braces, stays behind the golf ball, and really allows you to accelerate. But because you've done step one, accelerate under control. So again, same thing. I'm going to keep it nice and short here, and underneath, really throw it. Really feel that right arm shoulder going back. And underneath, let's have a look at this.
I might have been a fraction longer there, but there you go. Nice and straight, but it still felt feels like a punch because like throwing a ball, we don't go all There's a punch. There's a fire to this. You've got to learn that sensation and trust it. But it's a lot easier to trust, isn't it, if you know the destination you're going to. No. Yes. So, last week's video went viral with the irons. People loved it, and more importantly, they went out and tried it, and it worked. This really does. I love how it simplifies it. If you missed that video, I'll put it a link around here somewhere. But look, if you want to kind of test yourself and and figure out what you're doing in your golf swing, and more importantly, monitor yourself. Are you doing this correctly? Just check out my my new Swing Caddie app. I'll leave a QR code here. I'll pin it a link to the top comment below this video. You can try it 14 days completely for free. So, yeah. If you enjoyed the video, give it a thumbs up. Maybe share it with one of your friends. And like I said, if you missed the iron video and you feel like, you know, you've struggled with some of your ball striking with your irons, check this video out right here. But until next week, have a wonderful golfing week.
